The Interaction Between Multiculturalism and National Ideology in Azerbaijan

Anar Kamran Baghirov

Abstract

The article examines the dynamics of ideology formation in a historical context and how these ideologies interacted, providing impetus to the country's ethnopolitical development. It examines the role of cultural diversity in the formation of tolerance and pluralism, the path from the national ideology of Azerbaijani identity to multiculturalism, and the search for a new identity that seeks to combine these ideological identities. The study is based on an analysis of works by Azerbaijani and foreign authors. The article discusses the stages of the formation of the national ideology of Azerbaijani identity, a system of values grounded in the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, serving the independence of Azerbaijan, ensuring its development, and safeguarding national security as a legal and democratic state. The idea of Azerbaijani identity, designed to ensure the protection of Azerbaijan's independence and democratic development, has taken shape as an ideology directed against aggressive nationalism and chauvinism. The idea of Azerbaijani identity is based not on nationalism, but on civic values. Conservatism, liberalism, democracy and socialism merged into the common idea of Azerbaijani identity, which became the fundamental principle of the state. There was a peaceful, non-conflictual confrontation between Pan-Islamism and Pan-Turkism at the beginning of the 20th century. These ideological currents are ethno-religious in nature and theoretically underpin the ideas of Azerbaijani multiculturalism.
