Profile of Physical Fitness, Mental Toughness and Team Cohesion Among Members of the Student Regiment, Battalion 01 Wira Bhakti, Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia
Abstract
The Student Regiment (Resimen Mahasiswa, Menwa) Battalion 01 Wira Bhakti of Syiah Kuala University is a semi-military student organisation whose members take part in regular physical training and organisational duties. This study describes its members' physical fitness, mental toughness, and team cohesion. A descriptive quantitative survey design with total sampling was used, and all 30 active members (9 male and 21 female) took part. Cardiorespiratory fitness was estimated with the Multi-Stage Fitness Test (bleep test); mental toughness was measured with a 30-item questionnaire covering the three dimensions of the Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire framework; and team cohesion was measured with a 40-item questionnaire based on the four scales of the Group Environment Questionnaire. Mean estimated VO₂max was 45.1 for males and 36.2 for females, both within the very good category of the norms applied. However, fewer than half of members in each group reached that category (44.4% of males and 42.9% of females). The mean mental toughness score was 123.4, with 80.0% of members in the high category, and the mean team cohesion score was 176.2, with 86.7% of members in the high category. Members with the longest membership (3.9 years, n = 3) had the highest mean VO₂max, but no consistent pattern was observed across shorter membership durations. The results describe a single snapshot in time and should be read as a baseline profile. Because the scoring ranges and psychometric properties of the questionnaire versions used were not reported, comparison with other studies is limited.
